Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in Children, Teens, and College Students

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common disorder that affects many children and teens. It may also be present in adults. ADHD is a significant challenge for many families as it interferes with functioning in academic, home, and social settings. It is characterized by a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity. Behaviorally, ADHD is exhibited as wandering off task, a lack of persistence, difficulty sustaining focus, and disorganization. Individuals with ADHD often have difficulty remaining focused in class, are forgetful in daily tasks such as completing chores, and have difficulty following through on instructions and completing school assignments. Impulsive behaviors may manifest as social intrusiveness (interrupting others excessively) and/or making important decisions without consideration of the consequences. ADHD is most often identified during elementary school years as the symptoms become more prominent and impairing.

There are a variety of effective psychological therapy approaches including cognitive-behavioral therapy, behavioral interventions, social skills training, parenting support, and executive functioning training. An understanding of the individual’s cognitive, social, developmental, and emotional functioning helps identity the most optimal psychological treatment approach.
